In conjunction with Professor Carl Le Roux and Dr Almohaileb Faisal of St Vincents University Hospital Dublin - Dr Maurice O'Farrell published research in the international peer reviewed academic journal Diabetes, Obesity, Metabolism. The research led by Dr O'Farrell found a significant reduction in alcohol intake amongst patients on a type of anti-obesity medication known as GLP1 receptor agonists. The research quantified the reduction in units of alcohol per week finding a 68% reduction amongst patients consuming more than 11 units per week - from an average of 23 units to 8 units per week. The research was the first of its kind to be published internationally and gained considerable media attention being hailed as a potential breakthrough in the treatment of co-occurring alcohol use disorder and obesity. Dr O'Farrell has previously worked in addiction medicine which provided a context for him to appreciate the effects of the medication on alcohol use and the potential for using it to treat alcohol use disorder.
